I'm Not Burned Out. I'm Evaporated: When ADHD Burnout Minds Disappear

The difference is significant. Burnout leaves ashes. ADHD burnout leaves nothing but the memory of having once existed. Like water transforming to vapor, invisible yet somehow still there. Occupying more space while being less tangible.

3:47 AM [Brain Fog]

Browser tabs multiply like anxious thoughts. Seventeen open windows, each a half-formed intention. Each an unfinished sentence. I stare at the blinking cursor where my thoughts should materialize but brain fog rises from the keyboard like steam. Cognitive bandwidth collapse isn't gradual—it's sudden evaporation of capacity. One moment computing, the next... vapor.

Words once crystalline now dissolve mid-formation. The thought began, abandoned mi—

∅ [Executive Dysfunction]

When your brain's control center goes offline. Executive dysfunction isn't just procrastination. It's the paralysis between knowing and doing. Keys worn smooth from fingers that once typed coherent thoughts now rest immobile. Dust collects in the space between intention and action.

Executive function: the first casualty of burnout. What happens when your internal manager quits without notice. The executive dysfunction of having no executives left to function.

The cruel paradox: I can observe this executive dysfunction happening while being utterly powerless to intervene. Like watching yourself drown from above the water.

[Masking Collapse]

You've been performing being human so long you've forgotten the script. Masking collapse. The character you've played—competent, present, processing—suddenly forgets all their lines. Identity erosion neurodivergent minds understand intimately. The careful architecture of personhood crumbles without warning.

Error message where your voice should be.

That face in reflective surfaces. Familiar stranger. Not burned out but evaporated, the border between self and absence increasingly permeable.

11:59 PM [Late Diagnosis]

Late diagnosis trauma means mourning a person who never had the words to exist. Thirty-seven years of autistic burnout vs ADHD burnout—never knowing which exhaustion belonged to which divergence. Explanations arriving decades after the damage.

The distinction matters. Autistic burnout leaves you processing everything at once; ADHD burnout leaves you processing nothing at all. Two different forms of disappearance, both equally devastating. Identity erosion compounded by diagnostic uncertainty.

Time becomes non-linear when you're evaporating. Past and present blur—was I always this empty or is this new territory? The calendar says Tuesday but all days feel identical when you're simultaneously everywhere and nowhere.

[Dissociation]

The unique fatigue of neurodivergent minds extends beyond physical exhaustion. Emotional detachment symptoms begin with disconnection from joy, then progress to disconnection from distress. Finally, dissociation from self—the ultimate energy conservation.

What neurotypicals don't understand about our exhaustion: it's not tiredness. It's disappearance.

[Language Evaporation]

Language processing fatigue means words become distant, foreign objects. Vocabulary once fluent now requires excavation. The invisible weight of processing differently crushes the bridge between thought and expression.

Sometimes autistic shutdown arrives without warning—a complete system withdrawal when the world demands too much. Not selective mutism but protective silence. The brain's desperate attempt to prevent complete evaporation through temporary disappearance.

[Thought Fragmentation]

Sensory input without processing capacity. Light too bright. Sounds too separate. Each stimulus demanding attention I no longer possess. Thought fragmentation isn't about broken thoughts but thoughts that disperse before fully forming.

Steam on glass, briefly visible then gone.

∅ [Evaporation Complete]

Beyond tired: when neurodivergent brains evaporate. Not rest-deprived but existence-depleted. The emptiness after ADHD energy depletion has no name in conventional vocabulary. Burnout implies there's ash remaining. Evaporation leaves nothing but absence.

The fragments described here—cognitive bandwidth collapse, executive dysfunction, thought fragmentation—they're all stages of the same evaporative process. Water becoming mist becoming nothing but memory.

The irony: finding words for wordlessness.

![What masking collapse looks like: An empty chair in a room full of people, slightly blurred.] The space where thoughts should be. Executive dysfunction visualized.

Note: This essay explores the experience of neurodivergent exhaustion beyond conventional burnout. If you recognize yourself in these fragments, you're not alone in your evaporation.
